A FEILDING SOLDIER'S DEATH.
On June 7th. Mr A. E. O'Neale. of York street. Fcilding, received official intimation from the Minister of Defence that his son. Sergeant Arthur Bolton O'Neale. was suffering from eczema. On Saturday last Mr O'Neale received a letter from a son in the Wairarapa quoting a letter written by a wounded Wairarapa soldier (H. Wishaw), from hospital in Cairo, giving his mother details of the death of Sergeant O'Neale. this being the first intimation Mr O'Neale had had of it.
Says the writer: "We had a .stroke of the hardest luck that could fall to a company on Tuesday morning. April 27th, before our turn came to go to the firing line, the best and most, capable man in the whole 260 of us being picked out by a bullet fired at random among the bunch. It was Arthur O'Neale. We could have lost any officer, except Lieutenant Hugo, and the company would not have been much poorer; Arthur's place can never be filled. There is not another so capable amongst the bunch. He was a man who never made mistakes., never treated one unfairly, never unbent a fraction, even to his best friend, on parade, yet when off parade he was everyone's friend; nothing was ever too much bother for him to do for the boys; and he would shoulder anyone else's troubles on top of his own, and still keep smiling. At a sergeants' examination in our regiment he beat the lot, with plenty of points to spare, putting himself in line for a commission, which we all to a man hoped he would get when a rise came. But it was not to be.
"We were all very busy preparing breakfast, boiling our dixies, and it is possible that the smoke from our fires attracted the enemy's attention to us. Anyhow, they put a machine-gun on to us; but, as we had had shrapnel bursting over us the day before, we took no notice of it, and no one had been hit up to then. Arthur was standing on the trench talking to one of the boys. I heardPublic - Allan - Researcher - 4 December 2015 - Press, Volume LI, Issue 15313, 24 June 1915, Page 7
