- LIEUT G. H. BLACK'S GALLANT DEATH - WHILST ASSISTING WOUNDED BACK.
The public of this district will learn with very deep regret that private advice has been received by Mr & Mrs G J Black, of Kaiti, that one of their two sons at the war, Lieut. G. H. Black, has been killed in action.
On Friday, Mr Black received a cable from his other son, Lieut. E R Black, that George was reported missing & in Saturday’s casualty list this information was officially confirmed. Lieut E R Black is just out of hospital in London, & it is presumed that the news reached him through some of his brother George’s companions, who had been wounded & sent back to England. On Saturday Lt E R.Black sent a further message to his parents as follows:
George was killed 14th July, while assisting wounded back.” It is doubtless the position that the operations in the course of which Lieut George Black was killed were those described by Malcolm Ross in his special news cable under date July I8 in which, inter alia, he stated “An Otago regiment was less lucky, being caught by enemy fire in No Man's Land, but the splendid bravery of the officers & men made amends. Captain Jolly was wounded, & refused to go on a stretcher while his men were needing attention. With great gallantry he carried on & was subsequently killed. His body was located at dawn near our parapet & was brought in under darkness of night.
The late. Lieut. Black left Gisborne for camp in July of last year, being attached to the 8th Reinforcements. After gaining his commission as 2nd Lieut he was, on account of his splendid qualifications in regard to drilling kept back until the 11th Refmts, left. He was adjutant of Troopship 49. On arrival in Egypt he applied to be transferred to the regiment in which his brother was serving, the Otago Infantry, & his request was acceded to. The regiment was soon afterwards ordered to France. Lieut George Black was very well known & greatly esteemed & the news of his death will come as a great shockPublic - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 16 February 2024 - KILLED IN ACTION.
