This annual Award for excellence is a tribute to the memory of
Pupil No 175 Dudley Berryman Roy – or ‘Pup Roy’ as the
grieving boy with sad eyes became known to his Principal!
Just weeks after the death of his father Frank Roy in the
influenza epidemic of 1918, Dudley aged six became the
175th pupil enrolled at the Dilworth Ulster Institute.
A quiet gentle boy Dudley would have found boarding school
a challenge – the fi rst of several in his life. During his years
at Dilworth he proved himself a conscientious student, an
enthusiastic sportsman with a particular love of sailing, and
an avid stamp collector. He had creative flair and enjoyed
working with his hands – no doubt a pleasure learned in the
woodwork department at Dilworth.
On leaving school Dudley was awarded his Certificate of
Proficiency in December 1927, at which time he became a
member of a select club – the Dilworth Old Boys Association.
In 1928 he attended the Elam School of Art and Design in
Rutland Street in the city. Dilworth was also to play an active
part in finding Dudley employment with a builder – a trade that
was to serve him well during the depression years and fuel his
interest in the design and build of homes.
In 1936 he enrolled at Auckland University to study architecture.
When War was declared in 1939 he applied for, and was given,
dispensation by the Army to allow him to finish his study before
enlisting in December 1940.
In 1942 Lieutenant Dudley Roy left Wellington on his first tour
of duty, serving as an engineer with the Territorial Land Forces
in New Caledonia, where he supervised building construction
in the jungles of this idyllic Pacific island.
On return from his first tour of duty in 1944 he married Vera
O’Reilly in Wellington.
After just a few weeks of marriage, in January 1945, Dudley again
found himself on a troop ship, this time bound for Egypt. Here
he served with the Middle East Force and later became part of
the Central Mediterranean Force, serving in Italy. Dudley was
officially discharged from the Army in February 1946.
Experiencing ill health – he had returned from serving abroad with
Tuberculosis – Dudley began years of treatment and periods of
hospitalisation in the TB sanatorium in Wellington. In spite of this
setback he found work with his old employers the State Advances
Corporation in Wellington, where he was appointed Assistant
Architect working on State House Maintenance and Planning.
While in hospital in early 1950, he entered an architectural
competition to design a £250,000 home for war veterans to be
built in the Waikato. It was a large complex incorporating a
hospital wing, accommodation, dining and administration, and
while still in hospital he found he had won the competition. On
28 April 1950 he received the prize, a cheque for £600, from the
Governor General Sir Bernard Freyberg VC. It was a defining
moment in his career as an architect though it was not until 1956
plans were finally approved and building begun.
As his health gradually improved Dudley was eventually able
to work full time and in the 1950s set up his own architectural
practice in Wellington. While the War Veterans home was a major project in the late 1950s, he subsequently became popular for his distinctive American colonial-style residential designs. He also worked on projects designing commercial buildings and a school.
Dudley was a devoted family man, and a respected architect
and Rotarian. He was considered a gentle man and a
gentleman by colleagues, friends and family alike – this Dilworth
old boy undeniably ‘a good and useful member of society’!
In the last years of his life Dudley experienced recurring ill health
but continued to undertake some work from his office at home
until his death aged 72 in 1985.Public - Suellen - Child - 8 May 2015 - Family papers
