Biographical information
- Brother of Mr F.W. Savory, of Mount Eden Road, Auckland.
Next of Kin: Mr F. W. Savory, Mt Eden Rd, Auckland (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 2))
Charles Savory was a prominent New Zealand sportsman who represented New Zealand in rugby league and was also a champion amateur heavyweight boxer.
After initially playing rugby union for Ponsonby, Savory switched to rugby league and represented New Zealand on the 1911 tour of Australia. He was one of four New Zealand players selected for the 1911–12 Australasian tour of Great Britain, although a fractured hand limited his appearances. He later returned to the New Zealand team and played against the touring Great Britain side in 1914. That year he also won the New Zealand amateur heavyweight boxing championship.
Savory enlisted with the Auckland Infantry Regiment following the outbreak of World War I and departed with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. While in Egypt he helped organise rugby league matches between New Zealand troops. He subsequently served at Gallipoli, where he was killed on 8 May 1915. Contemporary accounts remembered both his imposing physique and his leadership among his fellow soldiers (Heads, 2015).
