Reason for aircraft loss :
Operation Frankfurt - 22-23 March 1944.
103 Squadron Lancaster ND329 III PM-A - piloted by Flight Sergeant McInerney (RAAF) # AUS/416976- took off - at 19:04 hours - from RAF Eltham Wolds, Lincolnshire to bomb the City of Frankfurt - together with a force of 816 aircraft which included 620 Lancasters; 184 Halifaxs and 12 Mosquitos.
Using an in-direct route to confuse the Luftwaffe Controllers the Bomber Stream crossed the Dutch Coast - North of the Guider Zee - then due flew South to Frankfurt.
This did confuse the Luftwaffe Controllers for a short period into thinking the Bombers' target area was Hanover - so initially the Bomber stream met resistance from only a few German night fighters.
The City of Frankfurt, on this air operation, was bombed with great accuracy - half of the City was without gas, water and electricity with severe damage to the Industrial areas - West of the City.
This mission lost the Allies 26 Lancasters & 7 Halifaxs.
Lancaster ND329 PM-A was probably shot down by German Luftwaffe Ace Hptm Gerhard Raht of 4/NJG3 at about 22:05 hours.
Warrant-Officer Trewavas is buried at Durnbach Cemetery, Germany.Public - Jenifer - Researcher - 30 April 2019 - www.aircrewremembered.com (England) : Profile of Lancaster ND329 PM-A
