  • John Galloway was the son of John and Jessie I. Galloway of Thames.

    Educated at Thames School of Mines, where he gained the President's Medal and a Mining Scholarship. At Otago University in 1937 he won the Turnbull-Thompson Medal for Surveying and in 1938 gained his A.O.S.M. and B.Sc Degree.

    He worked first in Waihi and Karangahake, gaining some practical mining experience.

    On arrival in Egypt with 2NZEF he was posted to Sudan in charge of a Survey Company and later was transferred to Divisional Engineers where he gained his Commission.
