My grandfather George McLaren (12/2419) was an NCO in the 1st Auckland Battalion. He joined the Army whilst working for NZ Railways in Tuakau.
In early October 1917, he was in charge of a group of soldiers with measles, behind the lines whilst the Battle of Passchendaele was on.
He writes in his war diary that he saw William Deeble march past on his way to the front lines.
"Wednesday 10th of October 1917 - Saw Billy Deeble from Tuakau among the reinforcements, they all went up the line to reinforce our boys".
William Deeble's military records state that he was sent home after being exposed to mustard gas in Ypres (Passchendaele) on the 17-11-17 ... and subsequently passed away from influenza back in NZ.
May William Deeble rest in peace.
