    Received her nursing training at Auckland Hospital, completed in 1907

    Worked at Cook Hospital, Gisborne

    1912 worked Hawera Hospital, Taranaki

    In January 1914 appointed Native Health Nurse (employed by the Public Health Department), in Ngaruawahia.

    Was enroute to England aboard the Niagara,with her sister on a private visit in July 1914, when war was declared

    In November 1914 she was one of 14 New Zealand nurses who travelled to France as volunteers to work with the French Flag Nursing Corps (FFNC). She remained in France for the next 8 months based at a hospital at Bernay

    Kendall writes Ella joined the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service Reserve (QAIMNSR) and whilst serving attached to the 17 General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt was accidentally killed when she stepped into the path of an oncoming train.

    Afforded a military funeral

    No. 17 General Hospital was in Alexandria, Egypt, situated in a large college with 1800 beds. This was a British Hospital. Twenty of the first NZANS (New Zealand Army Nursing Service) nurses were sent here. They slept in canvas tents.
