DSO citation: "Lieutenant Colonel McPhail commanded 21st Battalion which was one of the attacking battalions on the night 9 April 1945 over the Senio. This position was strongly held and enemy resistance was heavy. The battalion destroyed the defences and captured 186 prisoners. Lieutenant Colonel McPhail realising that the enemy would not be able to establish himself quickly pushed on and by his initiative and personal example the battalion had cleared the enemy from the Canal di Lugo by the next day. This action allowed the next attack to take place that night and caused the complete defeat of the enemy in that sector. AWMM - Military Cross and bar (MC*) AWMM
