Son of Henry Nixon, an army officer, and Elizabeth Browne.

After serving in the 39th (Dorset's) Regiment of Foot in India, he retired from service in 1851 and emigrated to New Zealand, where he purchased a farm at Tautauroa, near Mangere.

He was a member of the House of Representatives

When the First Taranaki War broke out in 1860, Nixon resumed his military career by joining the Auckland Militia and the Royal Volunteer Calvalry as a Lieutenant-Colonel.

On 21 February, during the attack on a Maori supply base at Rangiawhia, Nixon was shot in the chest. He died of these wounds several months later.

Cemetery records from Auckland City Libraries appear to be incorrect. The Monument in his honour at the junction of Great South and Mangere Roads, has a note on the bottom of the transferred headstone stating "remains transferred to this site 25 April 1968." AWMM
