  • Hubert Girdlestone was the son of Sarah Girdlestone, of Muritai, Wellington, New Zealand, and the late J. M. Girdlestone. A Government Surveyor and a member of the F.R.G.S. Also served in the Wellington Regt.

    Embarked Wellington, 31 December 1917; disembarked Glasgow, Scotland, 25 February 1918; marched in to NZ Composite Bn, Larkhill, 26 February 1918, and posted to Wellington Infantry Regiment, and reverted to Temporary Sergeant.
    Qualified at class and confirmed in rank of Sergeant, 30 March 1918.
    Admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, 2 April 1918 (influenza); discharged to duty, 6 April 1918.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1918; marched in to Base Depot, Etaples, 28 May 1918.
    Joined No 1 NZ Entrenching Bn, in the field, 8 June 1918.
    Transferred to Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 11 July 1918.
    Detached to Headquarters, 2nd NZ Infantry Brigade, 11 July 1918.
    Killed in action, 28 August 1918.

    Parents: Sarah Girdlestone, Muritai, Wellington, and the late J. M. Girdlestone. A Government Surveyor and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Also served in the Wellington Regiment. AWMM
