Military Cross. London Gazette, 1 January 1917, p45, Rec No 380: "Action at Flers, 15th and 16th September 1916. This officer showed admirable judgement when in command of two companies, 2nd Wellington Battalion in an advanced part of the line covering the north of Flers. On arrival at Flers he immediately grasped the situation, brought up his company, and consolidated a line covering the village on the north flank. This organisation of the defence was carried out at a very critical time, at a moment when the Germans were delivering a counter-attack from the North-West. Captain McKinnon tackled the situation with the greatest skill. The 2nd Wellington Battalion had been sent forward to help support the 3rd New Zealand (Rifle) Brigade, and to resist a threatened counter-attack by the enemy from the north West." Military Cross and Bar. London Gazette, 9 January 1918, p581, Rec No 1060: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in leading his company and two platoons of another one in an attack upon a village. After the position was won he inspired all ranks to a tenacious and successful defence for twenty four hours in the face of repeated counter-attacks and heavy shelling, during which his personal energy and fine leadership were most conspicuous." AWMM - Mentioned in Despatches (MiD) AWMM

For the period from 22/9/17 to 24/2/18 as Company Commander, Second in Command of Battalion, and on two occasions, for several weeks at a time, as Commanding Officer of the Battalion, this Officer has displayed great gallantry, marked ability, and fine powers of organization. He is an Officer endowed with great energy and enthusiasm, and has always preformed his duties consistently well, both in the line and line." AWMM - Victory Medal AWMM
