John Whitney founded the Colonial Ammunition Company with Mr Hazard. Mr Hazard withdrew from the partnership after an initial failure and Mr Whitney formed John Whitney and Sons, with his sons Asa, Robin and Cecil.

"Rumour has it that [Sir George Grey] occupied this house at Wenderholm whilst extensive alterations were being carried out at Kawau and that during one of his visits, a guest of Swedish origin christened the place "Wenderholm", meaning "Winter Home". Wenderholm / Mary Billman, 1971, p.[3].

John Whitney bought pieces of Wenderholm from 1893 to 1911. He added and changed a lot of the house. The Geddes family owned it from 1919 to 1928. In 1928 Captain Thomas Caradoc Kerry bought it. Herbert William Couldrey purchased Wenderholm in 1940. In 1965 the Auckland Regional Authority bought Wenderholm excluding the homestead block. By 1971 the ARA had purchased this land and house as well.
