Thomas William George Howard Hammond born and educated in Thames; one of first students to enrol at Thames School of Mines when it opened in 1886; taught for 46 years at Thames schools, retiring in 1932; authority on Maori history (See Ref file 510). Hammond was known as William or Thos Hammond to avoid confusion with his father Thomas Hammond.
