Le Gallais family - Papers
Letter to 'Sonnie' [Charles F. Gardner] from 'Lottie' [Charlotte Le Gallais] dated 8 October 1915 written aboard the New Zealand Hospital ship 'Maheno' while anchored in Alexandria [Egypt] describing Gallipoli. (3 leaves)
An extract from the text reads as follows:
[Page 1]
"We have completed another dreadful trip to Gallipoli and have come here this time – and to go to England – we commenced loading 10am and expect to leave about 5pm for Southampton. It’s fearfully hot here quite different from on Gallipoli – the climate there just now is quite nice – as far as we are concerned but I have a horror of that place – which I can’t get over. The shells I am used to and the noise and firing – still first of all I must admit I was a bit frightened."
