Josiah Martin was born to his parents, Charlotte Bromley and Josiah Martin, in London on the 1st of August 1843. As a young man Josiah Martin worked in insurance and the coal mining industry, until he married Caroline Mary Wakefield, and immigrated to New Zealand in 1867 with his wife and daughter. Josiah settled his family in Auckland where he established a private academy (later Grafton District School) then in 1875 founded the Auckland Model Training School. Martin was instrumental in the foundation of the Auckland School Teachers Association and was part of the committee until 1877. Due to ailing health Martin left the education sector and focused on his photographic practice.
Martin became known for his topographical and ethnographical photographs which were captured during tours of Polynesia and New Zealand. Martin established a photographic studio in partnership with W. H. T Partington where he employed the new dry-plate process. Their business partnership was dissolved and Martin established another studio independently (Edison’s building, Queen Street) which he later sold to Charles Hemus.
Josiah Martin was a member of the Auckland Institute (member 1881–1882; President 1889), Auckland Society of Arts (founding member) and the editor of Sharland’s New Zealand Photographer.
Josiah Martin died on the 29th September 1916.
