NZ Herald collection has been built up over many decades with deposits from Wilson and Horton as well as purchases of collections from individual photographers who worked for the Herald either on the Daily or on the Auckland Weekly News. APN the present publishers of the New Zealand Herald have retained a substantial collection of negatives.

The New Zealand Herald is a daily newspaper published in Auckland from 1863 and now owned by APN News & Media. The Wilson and Horton families were both represented in the company until 1996 when Tony O'Reill's Independent News & Media Group of Dublin purchased the Horton family's interests in the company. The Herald is now owned by APN (Australian Provincial Newspapers), which is majority owned by Independent News & Media.

Wilson & Horton also published a weekly from 1877 under various titles: Weekly News and Weekly Herald, Auckland Weekly News, Weekly News and finally New Zealand Weekly News from 6 January 1965 until the last issue 23 August 1971. The Weekly News was famous for its popular photographic supplement which frist appeared late in 1899.
