Pate
Pate. Bat. This is a hand made pate made of fautū (hibiscus wood). This pate has a cylindrical handle tightly bound in 'afa (sennit cord) the batting surface is wide and triangular in cross-section. The 'afa helps gives the 'autātā (batting player) a better grip and covers nearly half of the entire pate. The blade of the pate is painted black for decorative purposes. The surface is smooth, however it does show signs of wear and tear along the blade with a prominent crack which stretches 100mm from the tip. This pate is used in the popular Samoan sport called Kilikiti (cricket). Prior to being introduced to the European sport of cricket, the Samoan population played a similar indigenous sport called Te'aga. This game was played for both recreational purposes as well as in preparation for war.
