Te iriba n bobai

human history

Te iriba n bobai. Ornamental fan. This is an ornamental fan. It consists of four material components: te noko (coconut midrib), te kakoko (the young, white central leaf of the coconut palm leaf), and burae ni moa (chicken feathers). Te iriba n bobai is circular in shape and flat in form. The blade is structured with a series of natural off-white te noko that extend outwards from the centre. Pinnules of te kakoko has been dyed dark green, dark yellow, pale yellow, pale blue, bright pink and natural off-white to make up the woven structure covering the pinnules of te noko. A motif starts from the centre and extends out into five points at the edge. A long pinnule of te noko has been curved around the circular area and secured with a strand of off-white te kakoko. The selvedge ends of te noko remain long around the circular edge of te iriba n bobai. Purple dyed feathers are present in five areas of the curved edge. A slim, cylindrical shape begins from the centre of the blade and extends outwards to form a handle. The handle is encased with a woven cover of plain and yellow dyed pinnules of te kakoko. A two-ply cord in the same material but of brown and off-white colours has been attached to the base of the handle forming a small loop for hanging te iriba n bobai from.
