Basket
[Basket]. Basket. This basket is made from [pandanus leaf] imported by the maker Hilda Young (née Christian). This was made in New Zealand, Hilda Young is originally from Pitcairn Island. The basket is square in shape with an opening at the top. It has been made with a woven interior layer as well as a woven exterior layer that have been joined together. Two braided handles of the same fibre material have been attached to the edge on either side. The exterior shows that the pinnules used were initially one width, then toward to lower half of the exterior of the bag, they have each been split in half forming a finer weave. The base of the basket has been finished with a braid. One side portrays an embroidered illustration of three pink flowers with green foliage in the background made from woollen yarn. This basket was made for the donor. It is a copy of one that was made for Queen Victoria and was used by the British painter Jennifer Toombs as model for her painting that featured on a Pitcairn stamp series featuring handicrafts of Pitcairn Island.
