Kapa

human history

Kapa. Bark cloth sample. Made from the baste of tree bark from the wauke (Paper mulberry tree; Broussonetia papyrifera). Rectangular in shape, thin and delicate in form. It is transparent in some areas when held up to the light. Its uneven edges show it has been cut from a larger piece. The surface is smooth. The entire cloth appears to have been dyed a light brown from natural dye sources. Hand painted surface decoration has been applied. The surface decoration is similar to a plaid design. The use of a lapa stamp could have been used to produce the red ochre lines. There are also a series of 4 small black dots that feature at the cross sections of the linear design. These have been repeated throughout.
