human history

Ili. Fan. This is an ili made of tuaaniu (coconut midrib), kaumoe (immature coconut leaf), and laukie (soft pandanus). The handle of the ili is cylindrical in shape and is made from a bundle of tuaaniu, encased in lalaga (woven) laukie. The tuaaniu are tightly lashed together in a row to form the semi-circular blade. Kaumoe is then used to decoratively lash the blade using zig zag motifs. This technique is also known as faka sigano. The kaumoe is used as a beige colour as well as a dyed green and yellow colour. The ili is then bordered with frayed laukie. The laukie is also dyed a purple and blue colour to produce a striped appearance. As in many parts of the Pacific, ili were used to keep cool in the hot weather or presented as a gift to friends, family and visitors.
