[Hattie leaves]

human history

Hattie leaf. Painted bauhinia variegatae leaves. This is a souvenir made on Pitcairn Island and sold to tourists to provide income for locals. This piece presents two round and flat leaves that have been obtained from the Bauhinia monandra tree. They have been dried and then painted on. The dried leaf on the left portrays an orange and white bloom surrounded by green foliage and a bud at the top. The dried leaf on the right portrays a blue butterfly on a pink bloom surrounded by green foliage. The text, 'Pitcairn Island' has been hand painted in brown to the right as well. Both dried leaves have been mounted onto a rectangular black card. Below the leaves features a label portraying the local artist handwritten in blue: 'Bauhinia leaf Painted by Carol Warren'. The craft of painting dried bauhinia leaves originated from Hattie Andre (1865-1942) who was a Seventh Day Adventist missionary and teacher based on Pitcairn Island from 1893-1896.
