Va'aālo model

human history

Va'aālo model. Outrigger canoe model. This is a hand made va'aālo model made using two types of wood and 'afa (sennit). The liu (hull) is carved from one piece of dark brown wood and is unpolished. The ufi taumua (bow cover) and ufi taumuli (stern cover) are both adorned with pule (decorative spikes). The outside of the liu is also decorated with a border of mamanu (Samoan decorative motif) running along the top edge. The mamanu have then been filled with a white powder for decorative purposes. Four holes have been drilled on each side of the liu to allow the 'iato (booms) to be fafau (lashed) in place using 'afa. Out of the four 'iato that would have been fafau to the liu, only three remain. The 'iato are made of a lighter coloured wood and are shaped like thin rectangles. The three remaining 'iato are all broken and measure the width of the liu meaning the absence of tu'itu'i (pegs) and ama (float). This va'aālo is a model of the type of outrigger canoe used in Samoa for deep sea fishing expeditions and inter-island commuting. The va'aālo is recognisable by its ufi taumua and ufi taumuli. These covers allow for a storage cavity beneath them called pu'oso. These storage areas are then filled with food, fresh water and fishing tools needed by the tautai (fisherman) and those aboard the va'aālo.
