Hotunui, Whare Runanga
GALLERY CLOSED
Hotunui, carved house. The ancestors depicted in the carvings belong to Ngati Maru, Ngati Paoa, Ngati Whanaunga and Ngati Tamatera. Inside, the fifth panel on the left represents Ureia, a marakihau or sea monster that lived at Kirikiri, near Thames, and occasionally visited the Waitemata Harbour. The corrugated iron roof and milled timber exterior of Hotunui have been reconstructed according to historical photographs.
