Iliili

human history

Iliili. Fan. This is a hand held iliili. It features a length of kieto (ebony wood) for the handle component and a curved, triangular blade. The handle component is uneven, long and tapers towards its end. It is dark brown in colour and shows hafted markings across its slightly polished surface. Its base end portrays a rectangular cross-section. The structure of the blade is made from kāniu(coconut midribs) which have been woven together with lau fā (pandanus leaf) to portray a flat form. The sides curve inwards towards a serrated edge at the top of the blade. A pair of oven-woven borders line the curved edges of the triangular blade. The direction of the weave appears to begin from the spine of the blade to which has been woven over the end length of the handle. A small width of pale off-white lau fā has been wrapped over the area where the blade and handle intersect. It has been coiled with a braid of dark brown lau ulu (human hair) which has also been woven into the lau fā forming a diamond pattern.
