Pouvai
Pouvai. Baton club. This is a hand made pouvai made from one piece of toa (ironwood). This pouvai is dark brown with a smooth polished surface. The handle is cylindrical in shape and undecorated. The blade is four-sided and wider than the handle. Where the blade and the handle intersect is a collar of triangle indents that act as a unique decorative feature. Each side of the blade is marked with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are made of zigzag lines and triangular indents. These lines and indents have further been filled with white powder for decorative purposes. Pouvai were a type of 'au'upega (weapon of war) used in close combat. Pouvai were typically cylindrical in shape however some, such as this example, had four to six sided blades.
