Kete

human history

Kete. Basket. This kete is a plaited coconut leaf kete, with a final plait to close off the bottom. These baskets are very quick and easy to make and are usually made as a food carrier or fishing basket. The leaf has been split down the middle of the spine. The plait with this kete is one forward, one back, and continues with one over, one under. The midrib/spine is then folded to make the shape and to bring the two sides together, completing the oblong shape. This particular kete was made, used, flattened, and either rolled or folded into a cocoon, rectangular shape. The plait itself has very large gaps in it. Its colour is faded green with a brown midrib.
