Kete hīhī
Kete hīhī. Fishing basket. Made by Suitini Fakaofo. Kete hīhī are used whilst fishing to hold fish and other sea food. This kete is woven from launiu (coconut leaf). The rim of the basket is the split rib of the launiu and the weaving commences from this point. The weaving techniques used are mamanu (twill two) and taolua (twill three) with fakahala (change of pattern) in between. The kete is woven all the way to the base where it finishes with a fakaumaga (protruding edging) where the weaving concludes.
