Ipu

human history

Ipu. Container. Cup. This is an ipu made of a hollowed out popo (coconut shell). The ipu is a dark brown colour with a smooth polished outer surface and a fibrous unpolished inner surface. The natural peak of the coconut has been sanded off leaving a spherical shape. Located near the rim are two small suspension holes. These holes have been threaded with a length of fauato (sennit) that acts as a handle. The colour of the coconut and the fauato indicate that they are made of a mature coconut. Ipu were used for drinking as well as bathing.
