Ili lāpotopoto
Ili lāpotopoto. Round shaped fan. Made by Lise Sione. Ili are made in different shapes and sizes. The materials used to make them, as well as any embellishments, vary from natural to synthetic and/or a combination of the two. Ili can be used domestically as well as personally and as an accessory. Tuāniu (coconut midrib) are tied together in handle form to begin with, which is then covered in laufala (pandanus leaf). At this point the maker will fifili te fakakauga (plait the commencement band). Additional midribs are added as the blade is woven to ensure the blade weave is tight. Purple and pink laukie (dyed strips) are woven in decorative mamanu (patterns) or teuteu (decorative elements). The particular mamanu used on this ili are tiale (flower) and taimane (diamond). The edging of the fan consists of feathers which have been secured in place with two strips of fibre.
