Fauato
Fauato. Sennit rope. This is a fauato made of kafa (sennit). The fauato is a light brown colour with fibrous texture. The fauato is made by rolling two kafa (sennit) to create a thicker rope. The kafa is made of pulu (coconut husk) that has been gathered and mili (rolled) to create long strands. These strands are then braided together using a fili lautolu (three-ply braid) technique. The fauato has been coiled into a large circle before being tied together using smaller piece of kafa. Fauati were used to fafau (lash) parts of a fale (house) together. The width of the kafa used and the fauato is dependent on what it was required for.
