Tuitui ipu

human history

Tuitui ipu. Rattle. This tuitui ipu is made up of coconut shells, wood and kafa (coconut sennit cordage. Halved coconut shells are drilled in the middle and are threaded onto a long wooden stick which is cylindrical in shape. 16 of these halves are threaded onto the stick and at either end a small flat piece of wood is lashed horizontally to the stick to prevent the coconut shells from sliding off. Tuitui ipu are used during night time fishing when hunting palu (oil fish). One end is attached to a rope and then it is shaken in the water, the fish will hear the sound and gravitate towards that area, making it easier to catch them. Phosphorescence in the water makes it easier to see during night fishing.
