i Ula Tavatava. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula Tavatava consists of a lobed head and long slender adjoining handle. The head is carved into nine concentric lobes, collared at the underside and topped with a flanged central dome. A crack is visible between two lobes. A small drilled hole visible in one lobe. The handle is tapered and cylindrical in shape. The handle is slightly flared towards the butt, which has a small hole drilled at its centre, and two drilled near the edge. Fine cracks are visible down the length of the handle. The i Ula is light brown in colour around the lobes and darker brown around the handle and has a glossy patina.
