Ipu tau'ava
Ipu tau'ava. 'Ava serving cup. This ipu (cup) is made from hollowed out popo (coconut shell) of a niu tea (smallest variety of coconut). It is made with the lower half of the popo which is known as the muliipu. Ipu like this one are most commonly used to serve with during the 'ava (kava) ceremonies. It is round in shape and dark brown in colour with lighter brown markings on both the inner and outer part of the shell. Typically on a popo, there are three distinct lines on the outer shell which come to a point on the underside. On this popo, the point is pronounced and has a hole drilled through each line at the point.
