i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of a ball-shaped head and long slender handle. The head is uneven with fissures naturally formed in the wood due to the rootstock. The handle is round in section and is carved in a tavatava (zigzag) design from the middle to the butt. A large crack and loss is visible at the butt as well as up the length of the handle. The i Ula is reddish brown in overall colour and has a glossy patina.
