Hoe

human history

Hoe. Carved ceremonial canoe paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a long slender cylindrical to'o (shaft) and a leaf shaped blade that is slightly curved and a central pronounced ridge. Bands of fine geometric motifs are carved in light relief over all surfaces of the hoe. The to'o flares towards the butt end of the hoe, elaborately carved into eight stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) in a concentric arrangement to form the butt. The hoe is dark brown in colour with a somewhat glossy patina.
