Wa'a kaulua

human history

Wa'a kaulua. Double hulled model canoe. Consists of two kino (hulls) held together by two 'iako (cross booms) and 'aha (sennit cord). The mo'o (gunnels) and kino are one piece, the kino is defined by dark brown paint and the mo'o is a natural light brown wood colouring. The manu (spatulate) parts that feature at either end of the kino appears to have broken off. Kupe (covers) feature in the same colouring as the kino at both the ihu (Bow) and hope (stern) ends of the wa'a. There are also perforations in both ihu and hope ends. The kino interior consists of four pepeiao (cleats) each that have been used to reinforce the 'iako with. This is of the same wood colour as the mo'o. An additional piece of card states, 'Model of double canoe from HAWAII, POLYNESIA'.
