'Uatogi

human history

'Uatogi. Ribbed club. This 'uatogi is carved from a block of wood, dark brown in colour. The handle is long and cylindrical in shape, it is polished, smooth and undecorated. The handle curves outwards at the bottom to create a base, there is also a semi-circular protrusion with a hole through it under the handle. The club head tapers out and alternates between ridged and smooth sections. The ridges increase in increments of one in each section from the bottom to the top. This 'uatogi is one of many different types of 'au'upega (club) that were used by men and warriors during times of war and combat in Samoa.
