i Ula
i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of an uneven ball-shaped head and long slender adjoining handle. A deep split is visible in the side of the head along with several cracks over the surface of the wood. Small puncture holes visible at the top centre of the head. The handle is cylindrical in shape with cracks in the surface, and tavatava (shallow incisions), zigzag in design, carved over the lower section. A small hole drilled at the side of the butt for suspension. The i Ula is brown in colour and glossy patina along the handle while more matte over the head.
