i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of a ball-shaped head and long slender adjoining handle. The head has deep natural fissures because of the rootstock. The underside of the head is carved in a ring around the point at which the head meets the handle. The handle is cylindrical with surface scratching and wear. The lower section of the handle is carved with tavatava (shallow incisions), zigzag in design. The butt is concave with a drilled hole at its side for suspension. The i Ula is dark reddish brown in colour and has a glossy patina.
