Fa'alautaliga
Fa'alautaliga. Ear-shaped club. This is a carved fa'alautaliga made of wood. The fa'alautaliga is a light brown colour with a smooth polished surface. The handle of the fa'alautaliga is cylindrical with a flat butt. The handle flares to a wider four-sided blade with a diamond cross-section. The blade flares again to a flat blade with a round edge. Both sides of the entire blade are adorned with mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are made of triangular and diamond shaped indents filled with white powder for decorative purposes. Fa'a is the Samoan word meaning "like," or "the shape of." Lau taliga is the Samoan word for "ear lobe." Therefore fa'alautaliga refers to the ear-lobe like structure of this 'au'upega (weapon og war). Depending on the length of the handle, fa'alautaliga were used with one or two hands in close combat.
