Hoe

human history

Hoe. Carved ceremonial canoe paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a long slender cylindrical to'o (shaft) and a leaf shaped blade that is slightly curved and a central pronounced ridge. Bands of fine geometric motifs are carved in light relief over all surfaces of the hoe., including lines of serrations, repeated crescent forms, and sun motifs. The to'o flares towards the butt end of the hoe, elaborately carved into nine stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures). These are arranged concentrically around the butt which itself is a flat circle divided into nine wedges by incised lines corresponding to each of the nine carved ti'i. The hoe is medium brown in colour with a somewhat glossy patina.
