'Ula sisi

human history

'Ula sisi. Necklace of shells. This 'ula (necklace) is made of white sisi (shells). The sisi have been drilled with one hole and threaded using clear nylon string to create the 'ula. The sisi are naturally white and appear almost transparent. The surface of the sisi is smooth with slight ridges due to their natural shape. With no fastening mechanism the nylon string has simply been knotted to keep the 'ula together. Around the knot is a small space exposing the nylon without sisi, this may indicate that a few of the sisi may have broken off. 'Ula sisi were made to be worn at festive occasions or offered as gifts of welcome or farewell to friends and family.
