i Ula Drisi
i Ula. Throwing club. i Ula are carved from the rootstock of a hardwood tree. It is intended as a weapon that can be gripped in the hand or thrown in short range distances at assailants. This i Ula consists of a ball-shaped head and long slender adjoining handle. The head has two significantly large natural cavities resulting from the rootstock. At the underside of the head a ringed depression encircles the commencement of the handle which tapers into a long cylindrical shape with its lower half carved in tavatava (shallow incisions), zigzag in design. A drilled hole through the butt of the handle is thread through with a doubled up cord of plant fibre and looped for suspension. The i Ula is dark reddish brown in colour and has a glossy patina.
