Matofi
Matofi. Hemp. This contains three matofi which are made of niu 'afa. It is formed by removing the husk from the coconut, beating against the log, soaking in seawater, drying in the sun and fa'ata'a (twisting or rolling fibres to become one). The beating is carried out until it is softened and all the intermittent elements wear out. The process of soaking makes the fibre softer whereas soaking combined with drying creates a lighter tone of colour. This work is carried out by males, especially the beating and twisting process, who would gather in groups and carry out task while at leisure.
