Te foe niu

Te foe niu. Steering paddle. This foe is carved from niu (coconut wood). The foe is used to steer vaka fakateletele (sailing outrigger canoes) during sailing trips. The tautai (master navigator) operates this foe from the back seated position of the vaka fakateletele. It has a long cylindrical shaft and a narrow pointed blade with a slight peak along one side. It is brown in colour with a matte, smooth surface treatment.
