'Ato tui
'Ato tui. Coiled basket. This is a handwoven 'ato (basket). The receptacle component portrays a long oval base and a short height. An 'au (handle) extends from the base of one side towards the opposite and is a separate component that has been applied after the completion of the receptacle part. Its form has been constructed from coiled tuāniu (midrib). The technique of tui kolose (coiling crochet technique) has been used to apply the lau fala (pandanus leaf). Fau (lace bark) that has been dyed a dark brown colour has been used to create two decorative, serrated borders around the sides of the 'ato. The 'au has been made with a stiff internal spine of la paogo (stiff form of pandanus leaf) and then encased with a lalaga (weave) of lau fala. This style of 'ato could be ornamental as a result of its small size.
