Te reeree

human history

Te reeree. Sword. This is an ornamental reeree. A length of the kanni (coconut palm wood) has been cut, carved and filed to portray the blade and handle in one component. The handle takes the form of a flat cylindrical shape. Its end shows fragmentation from the grain of the wood material. A flat and wide blade extends out from the handle. A width of the ira (pandanus leaf) has been used to encase the intersection between the handle and blade. It has been bound off with the kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) in two areas. A weft of dark yellow dyed the ira decorates the weave of the encasement and a length of fringing has been left loose from the top. Two seperate woven encasement made up of pale yellow, dark orange and dark brown dyed pinnules of the ira cover two parts of the wooden blade. Two pairs of the noko (coconut midrib) run parallel to each other along the edges of the blade towards the pointed end of the reeree. A continuous inlay of wii ni bakoa has been positioned between the lengths of the noko in both pairs. A central perforation through each wii ni bakoa shows where the nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres) have been inserted and lashed horizontally. This lashing also holds down the noko along the sides. The ends of the noko and the wooden point have been finished off with a width of ira. It has been bound off with the kora and a length of fringing left to stand upright upon the end.
