Moenga

human history

Moenga. Moenga no te pepe. Baby mat. Woven from rauara (pandanus). Comprised of two mats. A smaller mat is interwoven onto the centre top of a large, base mat. Both mats are with taviri finish (where cut-off wefts are twisted under surface of mat for concealment). Both mats are also paretumu mats (term used to describe fine mats with a decorative band around each border). Overlaid dyed-red and dyed-black strips of apuraka (stalk from the giant swamp taro) form surface patterns around the four borders of the base mat. Overlaid dyed-black strips of apuraka form suface patterns, ara kakenga (ladder/steps) design, around the four borders of the small mat.
